The formal goals of America's foreign aid policy have always been expressly political...Undersecretary of state, Dean Acheson told an audience in April of 1947, "We have always used our economic power for political ends in the national interest. It is only common sense to do so."
Two of the major recipients of American aid in the Middle East have been Egypt and Israel. While other countries, such as Palestine have also been at the receiving end of American generosity. Israel was designated, obviously to raise up a strong democracy in the region and Egypt as a key player on the Arab/Muslim side who would support American interests as a Muslim nation in the Arab region. Egypt has been a major recipient of U.S. aid since President Sadat expelled some of its anti-American Soviet advisers and made a move towards a closer relationship with the U.S. back in the 70s. Egypt became the second biggest recipient of U.S. aid behind Israel, but it's time to ask what this $2.6 billion annual aid to Egypt has bought the U.S. and whether the money going to Palestine is old, ineffectual policy and not in the best interests of the U.S. at all.
