Jeanne Assam: A Good Shepherd Who Defended Her Flock

First a word about Good Shepherds in religion:

Metaphorically, the term is used for God, especially in the Judeo-Christian tradition (e.g. Psalm 23), and in Christianity especially Jesus, who is called Good Shepherd. The Ancient Israelites were a pastoral people and there were many shepherds among them. It may also be worth noting that many Biblical heroes were shepherds, among them the Old Testament prophet Amos, who was a shepherd in the rugged area around Tekoa, as well as King David, and Moses. In the New Testament angels announced the birth of Jesus to shepherds. Incidentally it is uncertain if shepherds would have been "in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night" (Luke 2:8, ESV) during the winter (see Chronology of Jesus), although the traditional date for the birth of Jesus on December 25th is disputed.

The same metaphor is also applied to priests, with Roman Catholic and Church of England bishops having the shepherd's crook among their insignia (see also Lycidas). In both cases, the implication is that the faithful are the "flock" who have to be tended. This is in part inspired by Jesus's injunctions to Peter, "Feed my sheep," which is the source of the pastoral image in Lycidas.

The Great Shepherd is one of the thrusts of Biblical scripture. This illustration encompasses many ideas, including God's care for his people, His discipline to correct the wandering sheep, as well as the tendency of humans to put themselves into danger's way and their inability to guide and take care of themselves apart from the direct power and leading of God. The Freedom Fighter's Journal's "HERO OF THE WEEK AWARD" goes to Jeanne Assam whose straight shooting saved the lives of scores of innocent people at the New Life Church in Colorado where she was an armed security guard and church member. I have no doubt many are saying that Jeanne violated the central tenet of Christianity which is to love your brother as yourself, but I say she acted in Christ-like fashion as the good shepherd who defended her flock against the wolf. The reports say if Jeanne had not convinced her Minister to post armed guards at the church that fateful day as many as 100 innocent people may have been killed.

I would state as well that Jeanne acted in the best tradition of an American Patriot and Freedom Fighter in taking up arms in defense of liberty's most important doctrine which is life. This is the reason the Founding Fathers of our Republic put in statute the Second Amendment right of Americans to keep and bear arms just after the First Amendment right to freedom of assembly, press, speech and religion.

The Second Amendment supports the First Amendment that supports God and the American Republic.

I am a combat vet of VN and Korea. I have seen many men under fire. I think that Jeanne Assam is the equal of any of them and the better of most. I admire her for facing an adversary who had her out gunned
