American Holocaust: 37th anniversary of Roe v. Wade

As thousands march in opposition to the Roe v. Wade decision in Washington today, hundreds more will gather in downtown White Plains for a local Rally for Life.

Today marks the 37th anniversary of the landmark U.S. Supreme Court case that gave women the right to abort a pregnancy.

"We will march in prayer with signs about the holocaust of abortion to be in union with brothers and sisters from all over the county who will be marching in Washington," said Elizabeth Costanzo, chairwoman of the Right to Life Coalition of Lower Westchester.

The White Plains rally is co-sponsored by the coalition and the Westchester & Putnam Right to Life Committee & People for Life, Hudson Valley Coalition for Life, Northern Westchester and Putnam Center for Life and Advocates of Life.

Several group members plan to board buses as early as 6 a.m. to head to the 37th annual March for Life in the nation's capital. Brigid Faranda, a founding member of the Hudson Valley Coalition for Life, has made the trip almost every year for two decades.

"It's a very positive and uplifting day," she said. "It's an interesting experience to be a part of because so many people are promoting life and coming together."

In recent years, Faranda said more young people — high school and college students — and families with young children have joined the march.

"You meet people who have a positive outlook for helping women and wanting to help women," she said. "If you have a friend, there are people that will support her and there is the idea of adoption. There are many solutions, so older and younger women need support."

The hourlong White Plains rally, near 222 Mamaroneck Ave., will start at noon.
