Sometimes a small incident says volumes about a large government agency. In this case the Environmental Protection Agency.

Around 1.45 PM on May 23, Ashville, North Carolina resident Larry Keller was in the midst of an international call which he had to cut short in order to answer his front door. He found two armed agents of the EPA who were accompanied by an Ashville Police officer.

According to a May 24 news story in the Ashville Tribune, a weekly newspaper to which I am a contributing columnist, the agents had blocked his and his neighbor’s driveways with their cars. They had driven all the way from Raleigh to confront him.

A Seattle man has pleaded guilty to felony harassment and attempted malicious mischief after trying to run two Marine recruiters off the road last July. Michael Dale McCright, known online as Mikhail Jihad, also is suspected of ties to a plot targeting the Joint Base Lewis-McChord, in the State of Washington.

McCright’s plea to lesser charges allows him to avoid a life sentence under the Washington’s three-strikes law, although he remains under investigation for “possible ties to domestic terrorism.” According to charging documents, he spotted the Marines by their license plate and uniforms, “appeared to become angry,” and tried to force them off the road.

Police discovered a cell phone in McCright’s possession when they arrested him in September that had been used to call terror suspect Abu Khalid Abdul-Latif, the ringleader of a plan to attack the Military Entrance Processing Station at Joint Base Lewis-McChord. Law enforcement suspected a strong connection between McCright and Abdul-Latif because both targeted the American military.

The Origins of Leftist Racial Orthodoxy

If "diversity" is good, why do liberals congregate in lily-white enclaves like Vermont (the whitest state in the Union, according to the Census) and Marin County, California?  White liberals hector others incessantly about the need for "diversity," but most have no interest in living in neighborhoods with large numbers of blacks.  The ideal society in the liberal mind always seems to be a Scandinavian socialist one (which is to say that liberals strive to make the U.S. more like some of the most uniformly white nations in the world).

The liberal enforcers of racial correctness are quick to decry the evils of racism, yet they are quite willing to practice it themselves in the form of affirmative action -- and they are strangely silent when blacks engage in "hate crimes" against whites.  Conservatives have been increasingly willing to point out these and other hypocrisies of our racial orthodoxy, but they invariably fail to understand its true origins.

What drives our contemporary racial orthodoxy?  Many conservatives mistakenly believe that liberals obsessed by race are afflicted with "white guilt."  Not so.  The truth about racial matters in the U.S. is this: racial issues are not actually about race.  In the hands of the progressive left, race is a tool used by powerful whites against other whites; specifically, race is a weapon used by liberals to bludgeon conservatives and delegitimize conservative, patriotic values.

But it has not always been so.

Prior to World War II, progressives and leftists -- like Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger -- viewed blacks as inferior human scum who should be eliminated through eugenic hygiene.  But after World War II, "progressive" thinking about race underwent an astonishing metamorphosis.  The American left forged a strategic alliance with blacks, using race to attack the core values of an American society they had now come to despise as the ultimate evil.

The dominant theme of the literature of the postwar era -- which 76 million Baby Boomers absorbed as the first generation to attend college en masse -- was the moral equivalence between the United States and the totalitarian regimes it had just fought.


In The Feminine Mystique, Betty Friedan, the founder of the modern American feminist movement, wrote that the American suburb was a "comfortable concentration camp" for women.  (Friedan, a Jew, wrote this in 1963, less than 20 years after the liberation of Auschwitz.)

In The Catcher in the Rye, J.D. Salinger's protagonist Holden Caulfield (narrating the story from an asylum after having been driven insane by the "phoniness" of American life) says of his brother D.B., a World War II veteran, "I really think he hated the Army worse than the war ... [h]e said the Army was practically as full of bastards as the Nazis were."

In Kurt Vonnegut's semi-autobiographical novel Slaughterhouse-Five, the real enemy is not Adolf Hitler or the Nazis, but the American military, the American officer corps, and American society.  Vonnegut's character Billy Pilgrim is a WWII vet who survives the bombing of Dresden as a POW; after the war, he becomes a respected citizen and a financial success.  Pilgrim absorbs conservative American values right down to the "Impeach Earl Warren" bumper sticker on his car -- and goes insane, just as his fictionalized son patriotically heads off to Vietnam.

But the author who provided the direct link between left-wing America-hatred and race was Norman Mailer, also a disillusioned WWII veteran.  In his 1957 essay "The White Negro," Mailer equated the atomic bomb with the concentration camp and urged whites to identify with black social outcasts as a means to escape the "totalitarian tissues of American society."  The "hipster" should encourage the "psychopath" within himself and "absorb the existentialist synapses of the Negro."  The white "hipster" would follow psychopathology-as-liberation "along the road of the homosexual, the orgiast, the drug-addict, the rapist, the robber and the murderer..."

"[W]hat makes [the "hip" ethic] radically different from Socratic moderation with its stern conservative respect for the experience of the past[,]" Mailer wrote, "is immoderation[.] ... [T]he nihilism of Hip proposes ... that every social restraint and category be removed[.]"  (Emphasis mine.)

The White Negro is perhaps the most important work of literature in postwar America.  It provided a blueprint for the cultural revolution of the 1960s, and in hindsight, it explains nearly all left-wing, anti-conservative behavior since.  If blacks were social outcasts in American life, then the white enemies of traditional American values would align with them.  An immoderate drunk like the late Sen. Edward Kennedy -- who was kicked out of Harvard for cheating, then killed a young girl he was presumably cheating on his wife with, and got away with it -- could not possibly point the finger at blacks and tell them to be honest, chaste, and sober.  He could, however, falsely accuse Judge Robert Bork of wanting blacks to "sit at segregated lunch counters" to deflect attention from his own behavior.  And it worked.  (Today, following the same "enemy of my enemy is my friend" strategy, leftists align themselves with Islamic terrorists and radicals, under whose rule they would never actually want to live.)

When white Americans finally began to see the justice of Martin Luther King's cause and the injustice of Jim Crow, leftists pushed harder and harder to include items under the rubric of "civil rights" that King, a preacher of the Gospel of Jesus, would never have approved of.  "Civil rights" became a foot-in-the-door that leftists used to attack and destroy all "social restraints and categories" in American society.

Want to kill your unborn baby?  That's a "civil right."  Marry another man?  "Civil right."  Dress in drag and use a woman's bathroom?  Another "civil right."  (It is hardly a surprise that while King remains a revered figure on the left, his Christianity has been airbrushed from his legacy.  He is almost always referred to as "Dr." King today -- rather than "Rev." King, a Man of God.)

The anti-conservative alliance between the left and blacks as described by Mailer neatly explains why Tea Party whites who admire the likes of Herman Cain and Allen West are nonetheless tagged as "racists" by the left.  It explains why Democratic Party leftists welcomed former KKK member Sen. Robert Byrd into their fold while slandering former Sen. Trent Lott as a "racist."  It explains why the Republican Party, founded in 1854 as an anti-slavery party, routinely loses 95% or more of the black vote; it explains why the conservative Supreme Court justice Clarence Thomas is the most hated man in black America -- hated more than the reprehensible O.J. Simpson.

It explains the virulent left-wing racial demagoguery surrounding the Trayvon Martin shooting.  Everyone knows that blacks are not being profiled and victimized by white "vigilantes," as the politically charged indictment against George Zimmerman alleged.  But the shooting provided a perfect platform for white liberals like Michael Bloomberg and Charles Schumer to attack the traditional, conservative American institutions of gun ownership, the National Rifle Association, and the right of self-defense by smearing these things as "racist."

Most importantly, it explains the thinking of Barack Obama, a man thoroughly steeped in the culture of 1960s anti-American radicalism.  It explains why Obama made a fetish of race in his autobiography and joined Rev. Jeremiah Wright's anti-white, racist "church" -- despite the fact that not only Obama was well-treated by whites his entire life, but he was given preferential treatment by whites.  Obama's racial thinking is inexorably linked to his hatred of capitalism, his denial of American exceptionalism, his countercultural drug use, and his support for radical abortion rights and gay rights. 

Left-wing racial rhetoric about "fairness" and "equality" and "non-discrimination" has been used to conceal a subterranean leftist agenda of anti-Americanism and anti-conservatism for over fifty years.  Conservatives persist in stupidly taking this rhetoric at face value; hence, they always find themselves on the racial defensive.

Conservatives need to stop being suckered by this leftist con game, and they need to do it before November.

Flamer: Highly Sophisticated and Discreet Threat Targets Middle East

Outbreak Alert: Flamer

Over the past few days, we have been analyzing a potential new threat that has been operating discreetly for at least two years. We were contacted about this threat by Crysys who have released their own analysis. (The threat is referred to by CrySys as 'Skywiper'). There are indications that W32.Flamer is also the same threat as described recently by the Iranian national cert. Our analysis of the retrieved samples reveals complex code that utilizes several components. At first glance, the executable appears to be benign but further inspection reveals cleverly concealed malicious functionality.

The complexity of the code within this threat is at par with that seen in Stuxnet and Duqu, arguably the two most complex pieces of malware we have analyzed to date. As with the previous two threats, this code was not likely to have been written by a single individual but by an organized, well-funded group of people working to a clear set of directives. Certain file names associated with the threat are identical to those described in an incident involving the Iranian Oil Ministry.

While our analysis is currently ongoing, the primary functionality is to obtain information and data. Initial telemetry indicates that the targets of this threat are located primarily in Eastern Europe and the Middle East. The industry sectors or affiliations of the individuals targeted are currently unclear. However, initial evidence indicates that the victims may not all be targeted for the same reason. Many appear to be targeted for individual personal activities rather than the company they are employed by. Symantec detects this threat as W32.Flamer.

Threat activity

By examining infection reports of one the main components and its configuration file, we can determine the targets of W32.Flamer and also a partial timeline. The timeline and targets will likely change, however, as we uncover more infection reports. Several component files have been identified. These are:

• advnetcfg.ocx
• ccalc32.sys
• mssecmgr.sys
• msglu32.ocx
• boot32drv.sys
• nteps32.ocx

Two variants of the advnetcfg.ocx file have been discovered. The first variant dates back to September 2010. The second variant appeared in February 2011. The configuration file ccalc32.sys also has two variants, both of which appear around the same time as the advnetcfg.ocx file.

In addition to our initial telemetry there are unconfirmed reports of infections dating back to 2007 as well. We expect to be able to confirm these reports in the coming days.

Based on the number of compromised computers, the primary targets of this threat are located in the Palestinian West Bank, Hungary, Iran, and Lebanon. However, we have additional reports in Austria, Russia, Hong Kong, and the United Arab Emirates. These additional reports may represent a targeted computer that was temporarily taken to another region–for example, a laptop.  Interestingly, in addition to particular organizations being targeted, many of the compromised computers appear to be personal computers being used from home Internet connections.

Threat details

A number of components of the threat have been retrieved and are currently being analyzed. Several of the components have been written in such a way that they do not appear overtly malicious. There is no high-entropy data and no obviously suspicious strings. The code itself is complex, which hampers analysis. The overall functionality includes the ability to steal documents, take screenshots of users' desktops, spread through removable drives, and disable security products. Additionally, under certain conditions, the threat may also have the ability to leverage multiple known and patched vulnerabilities in Microsoft Windows in order to spread across a network.

Figure 3 describes the interaction of the various threat components identified so far. Note that in other infections, the file names may change.

The advnetcfg.ocx file loads and decrypts configuration data from a file called ccalc32.sys.  The ccalc32.sys file is RC4-encrypted with a 128-bit key. When the threat creates the ccalc32.sys file, it retroactively modifies the timestamp on it to be the same as kernel32.dll, a Windows system file in an attempt to prevent the user from noticing the file. The advnetcfg.ocx file is also responsible for handling commands issued by a third component. Analysis of the remaining components has not yet identified which component is responsible for communicating with advnetcfg.ocx.

The file uses a complex method to inject itself into winlogon.exe, security products processes, or other selected processes. Multiple code blocks will be injected and called as necessary. In addition, it may also load shell32.dll (a clean Windows system DLL), but once loaded, replace the DLL in memory with a malicious DLL. The advnetcfg.ocx file also has the ability to capture screenshots and perform certain anti-debugging tricks.

The mssecmgr.ocx file is large and contains substantial functionality as shown in Figure 4.

It contains an LUA interpreter, SSH code, and SQL functionality. The implementation of an LUA interpreter makes this component highly flexible and configurable. It allows attackers to deploy updated commands and functionality very quickly and efficiently. This file may also be referenced in the registry:

Several additional modules are also contained in mssecmgr.ocx as shown in the diagram.

The mssecmgr.ocx file is especially interesting since its functionality references a file named ~DEB93D.tmp. The ~DEB93D.tmp file has been publicly associated by third-party researchers with a 'wiper' virus that caused several oil terminals in Iran to be disconnected from the Internet. The 'wiper' virus was named as such since it reportedly erased information from hard disks.

The nteps32.ocx file is primarily responsible for capturing screenshots. It retrieves configuration information from boot32drv.sys. This configuration data, encrypted with 0xFF, defines how the functionality operates. For example, it specifies how often to capture screenshots.

The msglu32.sys file contains code that allows it to open and steal data from various types of documents, images, images with GPS data, presentations, project files, and technical drawings. Similar to mssecmgr.sys, it also contains SQL functionality. Interestingly, this module contains multiple references to the string 'JIMMY', with messages such as 'Jimmy Notice: failed to convert error string to unicode'. Jimmy may be the codename of this module.

Within the code that we have thus far analyzed, there are multiple references to the string 'FLAME'. This may be a reference to certain attacks made by various parts of the code (injections, exploits, etc.), or it may be an indication of the malware's developmental project name.. No further observations have been made that could assist in locating the origin of the malware.

The modular nature of this malware suggests that a group of developers have created it with the goal of maintaining the project over a long period of time; very likely along with a different set of individuals using the malware. The architecture being employed by W32.Flamer allows the authors to change functionality and behavior within one component without having to rework or even know about the other modules being used by the malware controllers. Changes can be introduced as upgrades to functionality, fixes, or simply to evade security products.

Analysis and investigation into the various components is ongoing and additional more in-depth technical details as well as attack information will be published soon.

11 Inspiring Programs Helping Veterans Get Back to School

America’s track record with tending to the needs of veterans upon returning from active duty remains spotty at best and deplorable at worst. But public and private initiatives alike seek to reward their heroism with educational benefits smoothing the road from battlefield to career. Thanks to their prodigious efforts, returning service members enjoy heightened access to the resources essential to forging the rest of their lives.

1. GI Bill

   The American government’s official initiative assisting veterans requiring career training and higher education once their service concludes isn’t perfect, but certainly offers numerous options suitable for a variety of needs. Offered by The Department of Veteran Affairs, the GI Bill is actually several different programs rolled into one. Some cover active duty, others the reserves, and another makes sure dependents and survivors have their needs met as well. So much information and red tape obviously seems rather overwhelming for some, making the benefit comparison tools absolute essentials.

2. Veteran Success Jam

   A joint effort by American Council on Education and The Kresge Foundation, the Veteran Success Jam brought together organizations, businesses, and returning veterans with the hopes of establishing the right fits for the right folks. Working both with and in addition to the GI Bill, the online event provided a forum in which participants discussed and debated issues relevant to veterans and higher education. Colleges and universities received intimate lessons in how to best tailor their offerings to meet this demographic’s unique needs and circumstances.

3. Severely Injured Military Veterans: Fulfilling Their Dreams

   Once again, ACE participates in programming intended to meet the needs of veterans desiring a college or vocational education. Severely Injured Military Veterans, as one can imagine, focuses on making sure one of the more marginalized demographics among returning soldiers receive proper accommodation. Since 2007, more than 450 million Iraq and Afghanistan survivors have taken advantage of the academic advising available at three military hospitals. From there, they move on to schools capable of meeting their academic and physical or mental needs.

4. Yellow Ribbon Reintegration Program

   YRRP reaches out to National Guard members and reservists as well as their families, making sure they receive all the information they require during and after deployment. Education falls under the banner of services available, along with healthcare and legal counsel, specifically outlined to meet the particulars of serving in this particular branch. Much of the YRRP concerns itself with making sure National Guard members, as well as reserve members, receive proper school and job training funding for themselves and their families.

5. Hazelwood Act

   Under the Hazelwood Act, military members who are Texas residents — as well as their dependents — receive college- and university-level educations at a far more affordable rate than civilians. Specifically, beneficiaries receive tuition for up to 150 credit hours as well as complete fee waivers. However, these can only be applied to participating public, technical, and vocational schools in addition to employers based in Texas.

6. Veterans for Education

   Hosted by Rutgers University, this club encourages veterans and their supporters to educate the public about the realities of college life as a returning service member. Something of a stigma attaches itself to military members pursuing higher education, unfortunately, and organizations such as Veterans for Education work toward alleviating it in order to ease their transition into a brand new setting. Other offerings include fundraisers for a nice selection of veteran-related issues, guest speakers, and friendly going-away parties supporting enlisted students shipping off to Afghanistan or Iraq.

7. Student Veterans of America

   With internships, scholarships, and conferences available, the Student Veterans of America nonprofit should be on the radar of all military personnel desiring higher education; there’s chapters located all over the United States. Members here enjoy access to detailed resources regarding paying tuition and fees (if any) and settling into a brand new environment as comfortably as they can. Additionally, the extensive network SVA serves means cobbling together more beneficial strategies for providing veteran students exactly what they need to academically and professionally succeed after discharge or deployment.

8. Troops to Teachers

   Both the Department of Education and the Department of Defense operate the Troops to Teachers initiative; its major aim should be pretty clearly broadcast. Qualified military personnel with an interest in working in the education sector as a second career hit it up for the resources and training necessary for public school positions. Funded and unfunded programs are available, though all of them ultimately hope to pair off participants with positions congruent with their educations and interests.

9. Helmets to Hardhats

   Similar to Troops to Teachers, though run by different organizations, Helmets to Hardhats specializes in helping veterans receive the education and training requirements to work in the construction and building industries. The program also works closely with Wounded Warriors, ensuring equal employment opportunities for military personnel injured in combat. Apprenticeships form the bulk of Helmets to Hardhats’ programs, and upon completion and certification it allows participants a chance at finding the most befitting position for launching their careers.

10. Strength in Service and Strength After Service

    ONE Freedom’s reintegration programs involve more than just education, though it certainly stands as an integral component. Through free workshops and classes, both veterans and their families learn all about valuable job skills as well as strategies for balancing necessities. Even customized lessons are available for groups who want to focus on sharpening a specific area of their lives.

11. Veterans Education Project

    Though based out of Amherst, Mass., much of New England benefits from the Veterans Education Project’s programming. Rather than getting them back to school as students, it places them in a teaching position as speakers, opening up about their personal experiences and demystifying the realities behind military service. Veterans Education Project operates the Military Families Connect effort, a combination support group and community outreach service emphasizing what loved ones go through when someone they care about deploys.

(CBC) — The Muslim NAZI Brotherhood is claiming a lead in Egypt’s historic presidential elections after polls closed on Thursday and vote counting began.

A NAZI Brotherhood spokesperson said exit polls conducted by the party’s campaign workers all over Egypt suggested Brotherhood candidate Mohammed Morsi is out front of the rest of the pack. The reliability of the party’s exit polls could not be confirmed but several regional television stations were reporting a lead for Morsi, with Hamdeen Sabahi and Ahmed Shafiq battling it out for second place.

There are 13 candidates in the race — including liberals, Islamists and former regime figures — to elect a successor to Hosni Mubarak, the longtime authoritarian ruler who was ousted during the Arab Spring more than a year ago.

Shafiq and Amr Moussa are the two leading secular contenders and are both veterans of Mubarak’s regime — Shafiq as prime minister and Moussa as foreign minister.
